The Magic of Feathers - DIY Handmade Necklaces from Canvas and Fimo

Transform simple materials into enchanting jewelry! Discover two easy step-by-step projects to create feather-inspired necklaces using painted canvas and oven-baked Fimo clay.

How to make "fake" feather necklaces!

Here I present two relatively easy-to-make ideas, in a few steps, to create two fake feather necklaces, the first with feathers painted on canvas, and the second with feathers imprinted in Fimo (that oven-hardened plasticine).

For the first project you need the following materials :

Necklace with painted fake feathers

  • Canvas that can be painted with acrylic (I used the existing pre-primed canvas in the form of a drawing pad);
  • Acrylic paints, thin brushes and pencil;
  • Thin pen or permanent marker;
  • Scissors;
  • Straight pliers;
  • Chain of the desired size and two small rings for hanging the feathers;
  • Beads in the colors of the feathers;
  • A pendant of any shape;

Step 1. Draw the outline of the desired feathers on the canvas with a very fine pencil, then apply the colors, as desired, approximately as in the image below.

Step 2. After the colors have dried, go over the painted feathers with the marker to better define the contours. If you want, the feathers can be made in duplicate, that is, a mirror image to have two sides (in this case, glue will be needed to glue the two sides), but they will also look good with one side painted.

Step 3. Cut out the feathers with scissors (glue the two sides if this option was chosen);

Step 4. Make small holes in the tails of the feathers and attach them together with rings (or clasps). Now add the beads and the pendant to another ring, and finally attach them all to the chain.

The second project requires the following materials :

  • Silicone molds (these molds can be found in art and hobby stores);
  • Fimo (Oven-hardened plasticine);
  • Acrylic paints, brushes;
  • Chains and rings for fastening;

Step 1. Roll out small oval shapes (about 5mm thick) from Fimo, then press the silicone wedge shape onto these shapes (exactly as in the pictures), then carefully cut out the wedge shape, but don't forget to also drill holes in the ends of the wedges so that the grip rings can be inserted.

Step 2. After the shapes have hardened (baking them in the oven is done according to the instructions on the package), they are painted with a brush, and then wiped with a cloth soaked in water to remove excess paint. It is returned after drying, with small dots of more intense color on each feather.
